03History
A widely repeated account places the Negroni's creation in Florence around 1919: Count Camillo Negroni is said to have asked bartender Fosco Scarselli to replace the soda in his Americano with gin. The precise early history remains debated.
The drink stayed Italian for decades, then spread with the craft cocktail revival of the 2000s. Bartenders embraced its tolerance for improvisation: barrel-age it, swap the spirit, split the vermouth — the structure survives every revision.
Since 2013, Negroni Week has turned the drink into an annual global fundraiser, cementing its position as the aperitivo canonical text.
