Cocktailary

About

Cocktails,
as you will.

What you know — and what you have yet to discover. A Martini is a recipe, but also a century of argument, a bar in London, and a bottle of vermouth. Follow whichever thread is yours.

What you can do here

  1. 01

    Meet a drink

Beautiful photographs first — the glass tells you whether to read on.

  2. 02

    Know the recipe

Measures, method, glass and ice — each recipe cross-checked against the primary books.

  3. 03

    Follow the thread

Every entry links outward: ingredients, spirits, the bartender, the bar, the era, the drinks before and after.

What we believe

A cocktail archive should not read like a ledger, filed by chapter. A beginner should be able to pick a drink by mood; an expert should find the sourcing, the disputes and the lineage. The same page serves both.

About the name

Cocktailary = cocktail + -ary — the ending shared by library, dictionary and formulary: places where things are gathered so they can be taken back out. A library of cocktails; a dictionary of drinks. A formulary is a book of prescriptions — bitters came from the apothecary's shelf, and cocktails have lived in that culture ever since. Each drink here is recorded with the book it came from.
