Editorial policy

How this site is edited.

The rules behind every entry — what counts as a recipe, where the facts come from, and how wrongs get righted.

Recipes

Each entry leads with the canonical published spec — the IBA specification where one exists — cross-checked against the primary texts (Thomas 1862, MacElhone 1919, Craddock 1930). Where the record genuinely splits, the page says so instead of pretending certainty.

Taste scores

The 0–100 marks across five poles are editorial judgments, not quality ratings. They describe the drink as written — a 90-dry Martini and a 40-dry Mojito are both correct. Read them as a map, not a verdict.

Fact vs legend

Cocktail history is part record, part bar story. Entries keep the two apart: verified origins are stated, contested claims are marked “disputed”, and a good legend may be told — clearly labelled as one.

Sources

Primary: Jerry Thomas (1862), Harry MacElhone (1919), Harry Craddock (1930), the IBA official list. Secondary: Wondrich, Simonson, Regan, Curtis, and the archives of the named bars. Every entry lists its sources inline.
