03History

Tonic water began as medicine: British officers in 19th-century India mixed bitter quinine — a malaria prophylactic — with sugar, soda, and their gin ration to make it drinkable.

The drink travelled home with the empire and never left. Through the 20th century it became the default British long drink, and the Spanish 'gintonic' — served in a copa de balón with elaborate garnishes — reintroduced it to a new generation in the 2000s.

The modern craft era turned it into a taxonomy exercise: tonic waters for every gin style, garnishes argued over like terroir.

Origin contested — the entry keeps verified record and received legend distinct.
