03History

Its ancestor is El Draque, attributed to the 16th-century physician-aboard-pirate Richard Drake — aguardiente, mint, lime, sugar, drunk as much for health as for pleasure. When rum replaced aguardiente, the drink took its modern shape in the cane fields.

La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana made it famous; Hemingway's disputed endorsement made it global. The bar still writes it on the wall.

Technique is everything: mint must be pressed, not pounded — torn leaves release chlorophyll bitterness. Built, never shaken.

Origin contested — the entry keeps verified record and received legend distinct.
