03History

Around 1898, American mining engineer Jennings Cox reportedly mixed the drink at Daiquirí, near Santiago de Cuba — local rum, lime, sugar over cracked ice. Admiral Lucius W. Johnson carried the recipe back to Washington's Army and Navy Club in 1909.

Havana's El Floridita perfected it: bartender Constantino Ribalaigua blended it with shaved ice, creating the frozen style Hemingway later made infamous. The Papa Doble — no sugar, double rum — is named for him.

The craft era restored the shaken original: three ingredients, strained up, judged on balance alone. Nothing to hide behind.
