03History

The vodka Martini predates Bond by decades: it appears as the 'Kangaroo' in 1930s-50s bar manuals, an odd name for a clear drink that never explained itself.

Ian Fleming put it on the map — 'shaken, not stirred' — and the vodka boom of the 1950s-60s made it America's default Martini for a generation.

Today it splits the room: gin advocates call it a Martini in name only, vodka drinkers call it Tuesday. Both are right.

Origin contested — the entry keeps verified record and received legend distinct.
