03History
Jerry Thomas recorded it in 1862 — already a 'cocktail' when the word meant spirit+sugar+bitters. Champagne simply replaced the water.
The cube dissolving upward is the whole show. Modern bars sometimes swap the cognac for Grand Marnier drops.
Origin contested — the entry keeps verified record and received legend distinct.
