03History
1967. J. 'Popo' Galsini — a Filipino-American bartender working Los Angeles-area bars — entered the IBA world cocktail championship with a gin sour wearing tiki clothes, and won.
The recipe lay in obscurity until Jeff 'Beachbum' Berry excavated it for 'Sippin' Safari' (2007); the tiki revival crowned it a lost masterpiece almost immediately.
Its structure is the giveaway: passionfruit + orgeat + falernum is the Mai Tai's logic with gin — which is why every tiki bar lists it, and every gin bar claims it.
