03History
Thomas may have adapted the Martinez from a California Gold Rush town's request, or updated the Manhattan with gin — the record is thin and the folklore thick. Either way the genealogy is visible: sweet Old Tom dried out into London dry, maraschino evaporated, and the martini emerged.
Drink it beside a dry martini and the 19th century explains itself.
