03History
Ensslin's 'Recipes for Mixed Drinks' (1917) has the first print; the song 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary' was already marching across Europe. The chartreuse lifts the whiskey-into-vermouth axis where the Manhattan uses bitters alone.
The chartreuse measure is everything — a quarter ounce too much and it becomes herbal syrup.
Origin contested — the entry keeps verified record and received legend distinct.
