03History
Santini's Crusta appeared in Jerry Thomas's 1862 'How to Mix Drinks' — brandy, maraschino, curacao, lemon, bitters, inside a glass encrusted with sugar. It is the documented ancestor of the Sidecar and therefore the Margarita.
The name describes the glass: a lemon peel shell rimmed in sugar crust.
Origin contested — the entry keeps verified record and received legend distinct.
