03History

~1921 — Harry's New York Bar, Paris: vodka and tomato juice, equal parts. 1934 — Petiot, now at the King Cole Bar in NYC, adds pepper, lemon, Worcestershire, Tabasco.

The garnish arms race (celery → bacon → whole roast chickens) is a modern bar problem, not the drink's fault.

Origin contested — the entry keeps verified record and received legend distinct.
