03History

Early 1900s — printed in Hugo Ensslin's 'Recipes for Mixed Drinks' as a gin, cacao and cream equal-parts shake. Whether it honors the writer Alexander Woollcott, a baseball player, or a tsar is still argued over.

The cognac swap became so popular that it eclipsed the original — today most menus mean the Brandy Alexander. The IBA still lists the gin original among its Unforgettables.

Origin contested — the entry keeps verified record and received legend distinct.
